What does the art of painting still mean in today? That is a question that occupies Vincent Geyskens and that he explores in his diverse oeuvre. When we look at images, we look for connections with our world, with the reality we know. Vincent plays with these expectations of images and painting: what do images mean to us, what role do surfaces and paint play in how we read and analyse an image, what links do we make with images we encounter in our everyday life? For the artist, painting is a way of making thoughts concrete and matter visible. His work challenges you, the viewer. Vincent Geyskens uses figurative and abstract elements interchangeably and experiments with different types of surfaces. These range from paper to plastic, from canvas to objects he has found, and in this way he explores the limits and possibilities of the chosen surfaces. Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (27.05.-09.09.2021).

"Cuban-born artist Carmen Herrera (b. 1915) has painted for more than seven decades, though it is only in recent years that acclaim for her work has catapulted the artist to international prominence. This handsome volume offers the first sustained examination of her early career from 1948 to 1978, which spans the art worlds of Havana, Paris, and New York. Essays consider the artist's early studies in Cuba, her involvement with the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in postwar Paris, and her groundbreaking New York output, as well as situate her work in the context of a broader Latin American avant-garde art. An essay by Dana Miller considers Herrera's New York work of the 1950s through the 1970s, when Herrera was arriving at and perfecting her signature style. Personal family photographs from Herrera's archive enrich the narrative, and a chronology addressing the entirety of her life and career features additional documentary images. Over eighty works are illustrated as color plates, making this book the most extensive representation of Herrera's work to date."

"Artist Larry Rivers has shocked, scandalized, and intrigued audiences for close to fifty years. Rivers emerged as a pop art pioneer in the 1950s and later became one of America's most important figurative painters. Ever the iconoclast, Rivers is a multimedia artist, working in painting, sculpture, collage, and installation pieces. His eclectic style draws from a surprising range of sources - from historic events like Washington crossing the Delaware, the Russian Revolution, and the Holocaust to Hollywood movies. He courted controversy, as in his shrewd satire of Manet's luscious nude Olympia, painted in blackface. Rivers worked abroad, linking the art worlds of Paris and New York; he became notorious not only for his work, but for his provocative lifestyle. He moves fluidly outside the traditional art world, accomplished as a jazz musician, writer, and filmmaker. At age seventy-eight Rivers has never had a complete retrospective of his work. Now the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., brings his legacy to light in this definitive Rivers monograph."--Jacket.

Philip Akkerman (1957) has kept a diary since his academy days. This diary describes his struggle with the mystery of existence, his struggle with art and the art world, his struggle with painting technique and his struggle with himself. The question is whether without this diary he would ever have started painting self-portraits and, if he had already started painting, how long he would have maintained it. 'Philip Akkerman. Artist Diary 'takes you into the chaotic flood of contradictory thoughts in Akkerman's head. Slowly but surely, the 'real' Philip Akkerman emerges. In addition to texts about philosophy and painting techniques, the reader also gets a glimpse into the art world where nothing and no one is spared.
